A Logan Square man, Genesis Silva, was found guilty of murder after prosecutors revealed that he killed his girlfriend, Brittany Battaglia, almost decapitated her, and hid her body in a duffel bag in his bedroom until police discovered her remains during a well-being check.
The incident took place in June 2023, and Silva, 36, will remain detained as Judge Mary Brosnahan and attorneys go through post-trial motions before sentencing.
Silva’s defense argued that he hid Battaglia’s body because he feared being blamed for her death, not because he was responsible for killing her.
Battaglia was last seen by her roommate around 6:30 p.m. on June 2, 2023, when she left their apartment to visit Silva’s nearby home and attend a party. When she did not return, her roommate and the roommate’s boyfriend filed missing person reports.
Chicago police detectives started surveilling Silva’s residence after a friend of his expressed concerns about his well-being during a lunch they shared that day.
Upon stopping Silva outside his home, detectives accompanied him back to his apartment, where they discovered Battaglia’s body in a duffel bag. The medical examiner ruled her death a homicide due to multiple sharp force wounds, nearly decapitating her.
Moreover, police found a machete in Silva’s backpack and another in his car, both testing positive for blood. Additionally, investigators discovered cleaning supplies, chemicals, and a note in Silva’s kitchen, indicating premeditation.
Silva’s history of violence against women was brought to light during the trial. In 2009, he was charged with attempted murder and sexual assault of his wife, resulting in a plea deal for criminal sexual abuse.
Silva’s ex-wife described him as having a deep hatred for women, comparing him to a character from “American Psycho.”
Despite Silva’s attorney portraying him as a changed man who owned an audiovisual consulting company and engaged in harm reduction activities, prosecutors revealed that he had a dark past.
Silva and Battaglia had been dating since the spring of 2022, and after initially charging Silva with concealing Battaglia’s death, prosecutors later upgraded the charges to murder.
The case highlights the tragic end to a tumultuous relationship, shedding light on the dangers of ignoring warning signs of domestic violence.
