A bomb threat at a Hamptons high school led to the evacuation of students on Friday, with a 15-year-old student now facing criminal charges for making the threats. Westhampton Beach High School and Middle School were evacuated following the threatening calls, as reported by Newsday. The student, whose name has not been released by Westhampton Beach Village cops, was arrested for making a threat of mass harm, according to News12. The teen was later released into the custody of his parents.
The bomb threats were received around 10 a.m. on Friday, prompting a response from law enforcement. A K-9 unit was used to clear the campus buildings for any potential threats. Westhampton Beach Union Free School District Superintendent Carolyn Probst informed parents about the situation and assured them that all middle and high school students and staff were safely evacuated to designated locations. The younger students were taken to a nearby firehouse, while the high schoolers were relocated to a church.
The motive behind the teen suspect’s actions remains unclear at this time. In a separate incident, Center Moriches school district also received a bomb threat on the same day. All schools in the district went into lockout mode as a precaution. Police quickly responded to the threat, clearing all three schools within 20 minutes. Authorities believe they have identified the person responsible for the Center Moriches threat but have not yet located the individual.
The safety of students and staff is always a top priority in such situations, and swift action was taken to ensure the well-being of everyone involved. The incidents serve as a reminder of the importance of maintaining a safe and secure learning environment in schools.
