The Looki L1: A Unique Wearable Camera Experience
At CES 2026, the Looki L1 stood out as one of the most unique wearables on display. Shaped like an obscure Pokémon, this tiny camera worn around the neck tracks your day, provides AI assistance, and even offers some gentle criticism – at least in my experience.
For a full day at the show, I decided to put the L1 to the test. Choosing a slightly quieter day than the chaotic opening day, there was still plenty happening to keep me occupied. Here’s how the Looki L1 performed in Las Vegas.
Photo and Video Quality Assessment
According to Looki, the L1 can shoot 1080p videos and capture photos at the same resolution. However, in practice, the results were somewhat inconsistent. Outdoor footage looked surprisingly good, with quality surpassing expectations. On the other hand, indoor shots displayed varying levels of graininess, resembling HD webcam quality. While not perfect, the L1’s performance was better than anticipated.
Battery life is another consideration, with the AI’s “Story Mode” promising up to 12 hours of use. However, continuous video recording can quickly drain the battery, lasting only a morning in my experience. This energy-intensive feature is reminiscent of how quickly video recording can deplete smartphone batteries.
The AI Assistant Experience
Similar to Humane’s AI Pin controversy, Looki’s L1 features an onboard AI assistant. Capable of tracking your day, providing commentary, and answering questions through a touchpad, the AI functionality was adequate. However, in noisy environments like the CES show floor, getting the AI to respond accurately proved challenging. Despite its imperfections, the L1’s AI capabilities offer a cost-effective alternative to pricier options.
Contextual Understanding and Comic Generation
One of Looki’s standout features is its ability to create a comic strip based on your daily experiences. While the comic styles look impressive on social media, the process is more complex than anticipated. Generating a comic strip required personal photos and videos, which I found challenging due to a learning curve. Despite some confusion, the novelty of turning daily experiences into a comic strip is appealing.
Appeal Despite Shortcomings
Despite its flaws in video quality, AI functionality, and comic generation, the Looki L1 appeals to vloggers seeking a unique perspective. While it may not match smartphone quality, the L1 offers a convenient ‘set-and-forget’ experience. With further AI development, the L1 could become a compelling purchase for certain users. Priced at $199 on the Looki website, the L1 offers a different approach to capturing daily moments.
In conclusion, while the Looki L1 may not claim the top spot at CES, its novelty and potential for development make it a noteworthy contender in the wearable camera market.
