Chris Farley, a beloved and iconic member of the “Saturday Night Live” cast, faced struggles with addiction throughout his time on the show. Lorne Michaels, the creator of “SNL,” had a strict approach towards alcohol and drug use among the cast members following the tragic death of John Belushi in 1982 due to an overdose.

Susan Morrison, the author of “Lorne: The Man Who Invented Saturday Night Live,” revealed during a recent podcast interview that Michaels was deeply affected by Belushi’s passing and felt a responsibility to look out for the well-being of the cast. This new approach included addressing Farley’s addiction issues, with Michaels personally intervening to help him with his struggles.

According to Morrison, Michaels would call Farley into his office to address his drinking and drug use. Although Farley was excited to be summoned by Michaels, these conversations were never easy for him. Michaels took a tough love approach, at times banning Farley from the show and sending him to rehab facilities in an effort to help him overcome his addiction.

Despite Michaels’ efforts, Farley continued to struggle with addiction. After a period of sobriety followed by a relapse, Farley was suspended from the show and sent to a strict rehab facility in Alabama. Michaels believed that taking away the opportunity to perform on “SNL” would have a significant impact on Farley.

Tragically, on December 18, 1997, Farley passed away from an overdose of cocaine and heroin, the same drugs that claimed Belushi’s life 15 years earlier. Farley’s death came just two months after he had returned to host “Saturday Night Live,” highlighting the ongoing battle he faced with addiction.

Farley’s story serves as a reminder of the struggles many individuals face with substance abuse and the importance of providing support and resources for those in need. Michaels’ efforts to help Farley, while ultimately unsuccessful in saving his life, demonstrate the care and concern he had for the well-being of his cast members. Farley’s legacy lives on through his memorable performances and the impact he had on the world of comedy.
