Alice Coltrane, Monument Eternal, a mesmerizing exhibition at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, curated by Erin Christovale, is a transformative experience that delves deep into the life and legacy of the iconic musician and spiritual leader, Alice Coltrane. Born in 1937 into a musical family in Detroit, Coltrane’s journey from a talented pianist mentored by jazz legend Bud Powell to becoming a revered spiritual leader known as Turiyasangitananda is beautifully captured in this exhibition.

The exhibition is a multi-dimensional exploration of Coltrane’s life, divided into three themes: Sonic Innovation, Spiritual Transcendence, and Architectural Intimacy. Through the works of 19 contemporary American artists, visitors are immersed in Coltrane’s musical influence, her spiritual journey, and her dedication to creating a world of harmony and community. From interactive installations like Adee Roberson’s "BLUE NILE (cosmogram #2)" to Nicole Miller’s RGB laser animation display "For Turiya," each piece in the exhibition reflects Coltrane’s profound impact on art and spirituality.

The title of the exhibition, drawn from a book Coltrane wrote in 1977, embodies the essence of the show – a timeless monument to art, spirituality, and the pursuit of divine truth. The performances in the Turiya Rising series, featuring musicians like harpist Mary Lattimore and Coltrane’s daughter Michelle Coltrane, further elevate the gallery space into a sacred realm of reflection and exaltation.

As visitors move through the exhibition, encountering sculptures, paintings, and installations that pay homage to Coltrane’s legacy, they are invited to contemplate the power of art as a conduit for spiritual growth and self-discovery. The gallery space becomes a sanctuary for introspection, where the boundaries between sound, visual art, and spirituality blur, creating a transcendent experience for all who enter.

It is a fitting tribute to a visionary whose artistry continues to inspire and uplift audiences around the world.
