The picturesque wedding of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette took place at the First African Baptist Church on the scenic Cumberland Island. According to “JFK Jr: An Intimate Oral Biography” by Rosemarie Terenzio and Liz McNeil, John was deeply moved by the island’s residents gathering at the church to honour his late uncle, Robert Kennedy. This heartfelt connection led him to choose the church as the perfect venue for their wedding, instead of a beach or private residence.
The Catholic service was officiated by Reverend Charles J O’Byrne from New York’s Church of St Ignatius Loyola, the same church where Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’s funeral was held in 1994. Tragically, O’Byrne would go on to preside over Kennedy and Bessette’s funeral just three years later.
The intimate ceremony was attended by 40 guests, including John’s cousin Anthony Radziwill as best man, Caroline Kennedy as matron of honour, and her husband Edwin Schlossberg. The couple’s children, Jack, Rose, and Tatiana, played special roles in the ceremony.
Notably absent from the guest list was Lee Radziwill, Anthony’s mother and Jackie’s sister, as John and Lee were not close. The couple chose to accommodate their guests in various family homes on the island and opted for pick-up trucks instead of fancy cars to transport everyone to the ceremony.
The celebrations began with a rehearsal dinner at the luxurious Greyfield Inn, where Carolyn stunned in a dress designed by Narciso Rodriguez. The dinner included heartfelt toasts from Edwin Schlossberg and Carolyn’s mother, Ann, who expressed her hopes for her daughter’s future.
Carolyn’s iconic wedding dress, also designed by Narciso Rodriguez, was a simple yet elegant pearl-coloured silk crêpe slip with a cowl neck. The dress, which underwent several fittings, including last-minute adjustments on the wedding day, remains a timeless and legendary bridal look.
