Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has made it clear that he would decline any endorsement from President Trump in his pursuit of the New York City mayoral seat.

There are voices suggesting that Trump should consider backing Cuomo in an effort to counter the candidacy of the so-called “Muslim communist,” Zohran Mamdani.

During a conversation with NBC’s Kristen Welker, Cuomo was asked about accepting support from incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, who recently announced a suspension of his own campaign.

“I would welcome his support,” Cuomo expressed, indicating a desire for a broad coalition. “This is a general election—it involves Democrats, Republicans, independents,” he elaborated.

However, when pressed about the possibility of Trump’s endorsement, he noted, “The tent isn’t that big. That’s the limitation.” He then confirmed, “I have not had a conversation, nor would I accept an endorsement from President Trump.”

Despite Mamdani being viewed as the frontrunner in the upcoming election, polls indicate a tightening race following Adams’ withdrawal from the fray.

In fact, for Cuomo to secure a victory, he would need Republican candidate Curtis Silwa to gracefully bow out and attract a meaningful portion of the Republican voter base.

Watch the clip below:

Cuomo, now running as an independent after a significant defeat to Mamdani in the Democratic primary, painted the election as a clear dichotomy: “It’s a very stark choice between me and Mr. Mamdani.”

He characterized the options as “apples and oranges,” arguing, “We couldn’t be more different. I’m a mainstream Democrat. He’s a fringe Democrat.”

In a rather ironic twist, Cuomo took issue with Trump’s description of Mamdani as a communist, despite the fact that Mamdani does openly identify as such.

Cuomo lamented Trump’s assertions that a Mamdani win would necessitate federal intervention in New York, calling it “an existential threat” to local authority.

Although Cuomo may not embody the same ideological extremes as Mamdani, his tenure as governor is far from scandal-free. The 67-year-old led New York from 2011 until his resignation in 2021 due to allegations of sexual harassment, a period also marked by controversial decisions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the health crisis, Cuomo instituted severe state shutdowns, enforced mask and vaccine mandates, and was heavily criticized for policies that are blamed for the deaths of thousands of vulnerable individuals in nursing homes.

Currently, he faces an investigation from the Department of Justice regarding allegedly false statements made about his management of the pandemic.
