LSU football coach Brian Kelly is speaking out for the first time following the tragic death of his former player Kyren Lacy. Lacy, a wide receiver for the LSU Tigers, passed away over the weekend in an apparent suicide. Kelly described Lacy as a “bright star” and a good person, remembering him as someone with an incredible personality and a love for the game.
In a statement to the media after the Tigers’ practice on Tuesday, Kelly explained that the players would not be available for interviews as they continue to mourn the loss of Lacy. He emphasized the need to give the team time to process the difficult situation and collect their thoughts.
During his time at LSU from 2020 to 2024, Lacy made a significant impact on the team, earning 16 touchdowns and 1,424 receiving yards. He declared for the NFL draft last December and was considered a potential early-round pick.
The 24-year-old’s tragic passing came on April 12 from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after a police chase in Houston, Texas. The incident occurred just before a grand jury was expected to hear evidence regarding a fatal car accident in December, in which Lacy was accused of causing the crash and leaving the scene.
Despite the circumstances surrounding his death, tributes have poured in for Lacy from former teammates and alumni, including NFL star Odell Beckham Jr. and basketball player Angel Reese. The LSU community is mourning the loss of a talented athlete and remembering him as a vibrant and energetic presence on and off the field.
As the LSU family continues to grieve the loss of Kyren Lacy, Coach Brian Kelly remains a pillar of strength and support for his team. The legacy of Lacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew him, and his memory will forever be cherished within the LSU community.
