Traveling through airports can often evoke feelings of anxiety, especially when it comes to checking in and checking bags. The fear of lost luggage, items falling out, or bags being searched can be overwhelming. However, filmmaker Lucy Davidson takes a unique approach to this common experience in her stop-animation short film, “Baggage.”

A recent student of the prestigious Aardman Academy, operated by the Academy Award-winning animation studio Aardman, Davidson delves into the concept of “baggage” in a playful and thought-provoking way. In her film, we follow a trio of women who are portrayed as suitcases, each carrying their own emotional baggage. As they embark on a journey, we are invited to explore themes of self-confidence, past experiences, and relationships.

“Baggage” has garnered critical acclaim, being selected as an official entry at the SXSW Film & TV Festival and a finalist at the Sydney Film Festival. The film’s tagline, “Three girlfriends check in their baggage at the airport, but one is carrying a little more than the others. As they travel along the conveyor belt to security, can she hide what’s inside?” sets the stage for a captivating narrative that resonates with audiences worldwide.

Through charming black-and-white animation, Davidson masterfully captures the complexity of human emotions and the weight we carry with us in our daily lives. From bottled-up emotions to the burden of past experiences, “Baggage” offers a poignant reflection on the baggage we all carry, both literally and figuratively.

With a unique storytelling approach and visually stunning animation, Lucy Davidson’s work continues to captivate audiences and spark meaningful conversations about the human experience.
