Lucy Liu is poised to take the lead in the highly anticipated Peacock crime drama series titled “Superfakes,” as reported by Variety.
The series was first announced in January, and has received a series order. The plot synopsis reveals that Liu will portray a small-time luxury counterfeit dealer from Chinatown who delves into a perilous black-market world to secure a life of suburban respectability for her family.
In addition to starring in the show, Liu will also take on the role of executive producer.
Renowned for her diverse filmography, Liu’s accolades include memorable performances in iconic films such as “Kill Bill,” the two “Charlie’s Angels” flicks, “Chicago,” “Set It Up,” “Presence,” and “Red One.” On television, she is recognized for her compelling roles in “Ally McBeal” on Fox, “Elementary” on CBS (which enjoyed a successful seven-season run), and “Why Women Kill” on Paramount+ (previously CBS All Access). Fans can look forward to her next project, the independent film “Rosemead,” which she not only stars in but also produces, slated for a theatrical release this December. In recent years, Liu has expanded her creative repertoire by directing several episodes of “Elementary,” as well as shows like “Why Women Kill,” “American Born Chinese,” and “New Amsterdam.”
She is represented by Framework, CAA, and Schreck Rose.
The creative force behind the series is Alice Ju, who will take on the dual roles of writer and executive producer, also serving as the showrunner. Notably, acclaimed filmmakers Josh and Benny Safdie will join as executive producers, along with Howard Klein and Olivia Gerke from 3 Arts. Additional production team members include Ronald Bronstein and Eli Bush, further collaborating with Liu. Production will be undertaken by A24 and UCP.
Ju is no stranger to success, having previously earned an Emmy as part of the producing team behind the acclaimed Netflix series “Beef,” where she also contributed as a writer and co-executive producer. Furthermore, she worked on the popular Peacock series “Poker Face” starring Natasha Lyonne, a collaboration that traces back to their earlier work on the Netflix hit “Russian Doll.”
