The spinoff series Marshals from Yellowstone presented a gripping storyline involving sex trafficking, with Luke Grimes’ character, Kayce Dutton, exercising his authority as a U.S. Marshal.

In the episode aired on Sunday, March 29, on CBS, Kayce teamed up with Miles, played by Tatanka Means, following the disappearance of a teenage girl from the Reservation, who was last seen by Tate, portrayed by Brecken Merrill. Their investigation led them to uncover several women who had been lured into sex trafficking. Kayce and Miles were committed to seeking justice by any means necessary.

Part of their strategy involved handing over an accomplice to Mo, played by Mo Brings Plenty, for handling within the Broken Rock community. Their quest also included a mission to locate the missing girls, but they arrived only to find the girls gone. The episode concluded with a “To Be Continued” message, leaving the case unresolved.

The original Yellowstone series, which ran from 2018 to 2024, introduced audiences to Kayce, a former U.S. Navy SEAL who became the new owner of his family’s Yellowstone Ranch. Although he sold the property by the series finale, his story continues.

Since Yellowstone debuted in 2018, the story of the Dutton family has had enough potential to inspire six spinoffs (and counting) to add to the Paramount Network roster — but with that has come delays. Yellowstone focuses on a powerful family that runs the largest contiguous ranch in the United States. Amid their success, the […]

Luke Grimes shared with Entertainment Weekly in February that discussions about a spinoff began during the filming of the final episodes of the original series. Initially uncertain about receiving a spinoff offer, Grimes was eventually informed about Marshals, which would air in a CBS primetime slot with a procedural format.

Despite the opportunity to lead his own show, Grimes expressed uncertainty about the storyline. Marshals creator Spencer Hudnut mentioned in an EW interview that Grimes felt a happy Kayce would not be interesting, prompting them to create a more complex narrative.

Both Hudnut and Grimes suggested that Marshals would surprise viewers, with Grimes hinting at Kayce’s internal struggles, symbolized by his black hat. Although Kayce achieved personal growth in the original Yellowstone, his journey continues in the spinoff.

The next stop in the Yellowstone universe is a spinoff starring Luke Grimes’ character, Kayce Dutton. Yellowstone, which premiered in 2018, introduced viewers to the fictional Dutton family, who own the largest ranch in Montana. After finding success on Paramount, creator Taylor Sheridan grew the Yellowstone world with prequels 1883 and 1923. CBS ordered Marshals, […]

Grimes also addressed skepticism about Kayce’s suitability for a spinoff, acknowledging he might not be the most popular choice among fans. He admitted to being his own toughest critic, but used that as a motivator to ensure the quality of Marshals, aiming to appeal to both longtime Yellowstone fans and new viewers.

Grimes emphasized the goal was to create a show that could stand on its own, even for those unfamiliar with Yellowstone. He believed they achieved that balance as much as possible.

Marshals airs on CBS Sundays at 8 p.m. ET.
