New Zealand’s Lulu Sun faced a tough defeat against Linda Fruhvirtova from the Czech Republic in the first round of the Australian Open, losing 6-3, 7-5. The match took place in warm conditions on court 13.
This match marked Sun’s first of the year as she continues to recover from a wrist injury. On the other hand, Fruhvirtova advanced through the qualifying rounds by winning three matches.
Sun, aged 24 and left-handed, held significant leads in both sets, going up 3-1 in each. Despite falling behind 3-5 in the second set, she managed to fight back and level the scores at 5-5 after saving several match points.
However, Fruhvirtova, ranked 132, ultimately broke Sun’s serve to take a 6-5 lead and secured the victory by holding her own serve.
In other news, Erin Routliffe and her new doubles partner Asia Muhammad are set to compete on Wednesday afternoon.
