The specifics of Trump’s supposed agreement with Greenland are still unclear, leaving doubts about any potential new benefits it may bring to existing U.S. agreements dating back to 1951.
“There’s a lot left unsaid,” noted Haberman, pointing out that the president did not provide clarity on the matter. “Based on current discussions, it seems like they are discussing something that already exists.”
While recognizing Greenland’s strategic importance, Haberman highlighted Trump’s aggressive approach in attempting to acquire the island, causing concern among U.S. allies. “This issue is far from over,” she cautioned, emphasizing that European leaders are still “very alarmed.”
She suggested that they were caught off guard by Trump’s increased boldness in his second term and warned that he will push boundaries until someone intervenes. “He seemed to struggle to navigate this situation today,” she added.
