According to Maggie Haberman of The New York Times, there is a paradox in how Donald Trump is handling the Epstein controversy. Despite the president’s usual ability to control the narrative, he is inadvertently keeping the scandal alive by repeatedly discussing his connections to Jeffrey Epstein. Even Trump’s allies in the White House are surprised that they have not been able to shut down the controversy.
Haberman pointed out that Trump’s recent comments, such as claiming that Epstein “stole” employees from his Mar-a-Lago resort, are only fueling more interest and scrutiny. This includes demands from his own supporters for the release of federal files on Epstein. Haberman noted that Trump seems unable to stop talking about the issue, while also not wanting to continue discussing it.
Furthermore, Haberman warned that Trump’s use of the word “stole” in relation to Epstein could be received poorly, especially by women and victims of Epstein. By providing new information unsolicited, Trump is inadvertently keeping the controversy alive instead of calming it down.
