Pornhub has made a bold decision to no longer be available in Florida in response to a new state law that requires age verification to visit adult platforms. The law, which goes into effect on January 1, requires users to share their state ID to prove they are 18 or older. Rather than comply with this requirement, Pornhub’s parent company, Aylo, has chosen to block access to users in Florida.
Porn star Maitland Ward spoke to TMZ about the decision, describing it as a double-edged sword. While she acknowledges that Pornhub could do more to prevent minors from accessing the site, she believes that the idea of Florida tracking people’s porn habits is a slippery slope that infringes on personal privacy.
Ward also noted that by taking this stand, Pornhub is seen as defending free speech. She predicts that the move will drive more people towards paid sites featuring individual stars and platforms like OnlyFans.
However, Ward pointed out that by pulling out of Florida, Pornhub is alienating a significant portion of its user base. Florida is one of only four states where it is legal to film professional porn, making the decision a significant one for the industry.
Paid sites typically require a credit card for access, making the sharing of ID information less invasive. However, because Pornhub is a free site, requiring users to upload a driver’s license is viewed as a step too far.
In response to the new law, the Free Speech Coalition has filed a federal lawsuit against the state, arguing that it violates free speech rights and poses a risk to users’ personal data. This legal challenge highlights the ongoing debate between privacy rights and age verification in the digital age.
