SPOILER ALERT: This article contains spoilers for “Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair”
Linwood Boomer continues to lead “Malcolm in the Middle” as the series makes a comeback with a four-episode revival titled, “Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair” after being off the air for 20 years. This return brings about several changes, notably in its visual presentation.
“The house is different, and it reflects the life Hal and Lois would lead if their children hadn’t disrupted things daily,” Boomer explains to Variety. Beyond the set change, the series’ overall color palette has shifted. The original show had a warm, grainy appearance, while the new episodes are digitally shot, offering a crisper, cleaner look, as opposed to the original 16mm film.
Executive producer Tracy Katsky Boomer notes that filming in Canada instead of California also contributed to this change in appearance. “Shooting in Vancouver gives a different light, more blue compared to the amber hue of Southern California. We had to re-color time quite a bit because it appeared too cold for us,” she says.
Despite these changes, the notorious family chaos remains unchanged. In this new series, Malcolm, portrayed by Frankie Muniz, has become estranged enough from his family that they are unaware he has a teenage daughter, played by Keeley Karsten.
“Tracy’s idea of Malcolm having a daughter similar to him was a breakthrough,” Boomer shares. “My children aren’t exactly like me, but they are inconveniently smart, which completely undermines my parenting strategies.”
The revival peaks with an episode centered around Hal and Lois’ 40th anniversary, featuring numerous original cast members. The Krelboynes, played by Kyle Sullivan, Victor Z. Isaac, and Evan Matthew Cohen, deliver a hilariously chaotic dance routine that inspired the Boomers to create a similar routine with the entire cast and crew for the episode’s conclusion.
“That dance had everyone on the floor laughing,” Linwood Boomer recalls. “For the end credits, we thought, ‘Let’s all do the Krelboyne dance.’ So, we got everyone involved — the crew, the cast, all the actors. It was an absolute blast.”
While the fourth episode leaves open the possibility for more tales from Malcolm’s adult years, the Boomers currently have no plans for additional episodes.
“This project only happened because it was a closed-ended series,” Linwood Boomer explains. “Bryan has a distinguished career, and Frankie juggles multiple successful careers. The only way this worked was as a finite project. There’s a chance for another closed-ended project in the future, but no discussions are underway.”
“Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair” is currently streaming on Hulu.
