A man currently on “second chance probation” for using victims’ phones to steal money from them has been taken into custody again after prosecutors revealed he escalated his actions by robbing a man at gunpoint to access his phone and transfer a significant amount of money to himself.

Kyir Walker, 22, was previously sentenced to a two-year “second chance probation” term following two theft incidents in 2024. On Friday, Judge John Hock decided to detain him. Law enforcement apprehended Walker near Wrigley Field on Thursday night when they recognized that he was a suspect in a May armed robbery in River North, according to a report from the Chicago Police Department.

Reportedly, Walker confronted a 23-year-old man from Crown Point, Indiana, at approximately 4 a.m. on May 11 in the 600 block of North Clark. He allegedly brandished a firearm, demanded that the victim unlock his phone, and transferred $1,190 via Zelle to an account named “BBOYS.” The victim subsequently identified Walker in a photo lineup, police reports indicate.

Last November, Walker had accepted a beneficial plea agreement. Following his guilty plea on two counts of theft from person, Judge Shelley Sutker-Dermer sentenced him to “second chance probation,” requiring him to fulfill 40 hours of community service and obtain his GED; should he succeed, the convictions would be expunged from his record.

CWBChicago was established in 2013 by five local residents from Wrigleyville and Boystown who were frustrated by the misinformation prevalent at local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings.

Since then, our coverage has broadened to include Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and other areas on the North Side. Nevertheless, our core mission remains the same: to deliver original public safety journalism that provides deeper context and more thorough details than those offered by mainstream media outlets.
