A recent development in the case of the fatal shooting of a father and son at their family-owned jewelry store in Little Village last autumn has brought a 35-year-old West Side man, Muhammad Thomas, into custody. The arrest was made by a U.S. Marshals task force in St. Louis, and Thomas is set to appear for a detention hearing at 26th and California on Friday. Prosecutors are expected to provide more details about the allegations at that time.
Thomas is facing charges for the murder of 63-year-old Fino Alamo Dominguez and his 25-year-old son, Luis Alamo, during a burglary at their jewelry store on the 3800 block of West 26th Street. Additionally, he is accused of shooting a 26-year-old man in the 1700 block of West Maypole Avenue in July 2023 and robbing another victim in the 2300 block of West Cermak Road in July 2024, as per the Chicago Police Department.
The tragic incident at the jewelry store unfolded on November 8 when officers responded to multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire and found Dominguez and his son critically wounded. Despite being rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital, both victims succumbed to their injuries. Initial reports suggested that a man entered the store, brandished a gun, and demanded items before a struggle ensued, spilling onto the street where shots were fired.
Surveillance footage later revealed a man entering and quickly exiting the store, chased by one of the victims, followed by the second victim. Gunshots rang out, and the suspect fled the scene in a white car. Following the incident, Chicago police released images of two men wanted for questioning, sparking online speculation, including unfounded rumors linking federal immigration agents to the murders.
Misinformation spread on social media suggested a delay in calling 911 due to fear of immigration enforcement and implicated a white SUV with Texas plates in the crime. However, surveillance video and police dispatch records disproved these claims, showing prompt reporting of the incident. The suspect was seen leaving in a white car, not the SUV mentioned in the rumors.
As the investigation progresses, the community mourns the loss of Dominguez and Alamo while seeking justice for the senseless act of violence. The arrest of Muhammad Thomas marks a significant development in the case, shedding light on the events leading to the tragic outcome at the family-owned jewelry store in Little Village.
