Man Charged with Murder on Independence Day 2023
Chicago prosecutors have formally charged Luis Vela, 28, with committing a murder on Independence Day in 2023. The charges came after Chicago police utilized video cellular phone location data to track Vela’s movements from Diversey Harbor to the crime scene, leading to his arrest.
Judge David Kelly has ordered Vela to await trial on a charge of first-degree murder in connection with the incident.
The crime occurred at around 7:20 a.m. on Independence Day, where two individuals shot and killed 24-year-old Leonardo Martinez and critically injured his 25-year-old brother in the 4400 block of South Wood.
Police investigators were able to locate the getaway car used by the shooters and discovered that it had been at Diversey Harbor shortly before the murder. Further video evidence from Diversey Harbor showed a man, identified as Vela, wearing clothing similar to one of the shooters, getting into the vehicle. Prosecutors also mentioned that Vela’s DNA was found inside the car.
Prosecutors stated that Vela’s phone location data traced the exact route taken by the getaway car from Diversey Harbor to the shooting scene and indicated his presence at the crime scene during the time of the incident.
Records from Cook County court revealed that Vela had previously served a five-year prison sentence in 2017 after pleading guilty to aggravated discharge of a firearm and possessing a stolen motor vehicle in separate cases.
