A Rogers Park Man Charged with Sexual Assault at Knifepoint on the North Side
A Rogers Park man has been charged with sexually assaulting two women at knifepoint on the North Side, with Chicago police also looking into other sexual assault cases in the area that have been linked to a single crime pattern.
Tymarion Averyhart, 19, is set to appear for a detention hearing on Sunday afternoon at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse.
Chicago Police Department stated that he is the individual responsible for raping a 21-year-old woman at knifepoint in the 1800 block of West Lunt on Thursday night. Averyhart was apprehended by officers just minutes after the attack, approximately a block away from where the crime occurred.
During a traffic stop in Evanston around 11:07 p.m., officers encountered a victim who reported that a man had brandished a knife and sexually assaulted her in a gangway as she was walking. Subsequently, Averyhart was located in the 1800 block of West Greenleaf and taken into custody.
Similar to the serial rapist that was previously cautioned about by police, Averyhart was found to have a bike and a knife in his possession, prompting investigators to explore potential connections between him and the earlier cases.
At present, Averyhart is facing charges for one of the prior assaults: the rape of a 27-year-old woman on December 26, 2024, in the 6200 block of North Bell. Allegedly breaking into the woman’s residence on the first floor around 2:50 a.m., Averyhart engaged in “unlawful sexual contact” while armed with a knife, as per a CPD alert. Additionally, he allegedly stole the woman’s keys and PlayStation before departing.
Furthermore, he has been charged with two residential burglaries on the same block, one occurring on December 28 and the other on January 10, according to police statements on Saturday.
Prosecutors have filed charges against him for two counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault, committing a sex offense during a home invasion, aggravated armed kidnapping, aggravated unlawful restraint, and three counts of residential burglary.
CPD disclosed that Averyhart resides in the 6200 block of North Hermitage, situated just east of the area where the serial rapist was believed to have been operating and just west of where the recent attack took place.
The two unsolved crimes that have been categorized under the crime pattern are:
- On March 25, an incident in the 6200 block of North Artesian where a man displayed a knife and stole an item from a woman entering her building. Subsequently, he targeted another woman in the 6200 block of North Oakley, robbing her and engaging in “unlawful sexual contact” before fleeing the scene.
- On April 25, a woman was attacked in the 6100 block of North Campbell as she was entering her residence. The perpetrator confronted her with a knife, involved in “unlawful sexual contact,” and took her valuables.
