A Convicted Sex Offender Accused of Raping Two More Women
A man who was previously convicted of sexually attacking and robbing an intoxicated woman in Logan Square is now facing new allegations of sexual assault involving two more women. Anwar Javier Barbour, a registered sex offender, is accused of failing to comply with registration requirements and is now facing charges for the recent assaults.
In 2011, Barbour, then 16 years old, was part of a group of males who sexually assaulted and robbed an 18-year-old woman near the Congress Theater after she was turned away from a concert. He received a six-year sentence for his involvement in the attack.
Fast forward to last year, Barbour is now facing accusations of raping two women in separate incidents.
First Assault
The first victim, a 28-year-old woman, met friends at a bar on January 10, 2024, where she consumed several drinks. After encountering Barbour at a second bar, he allegedly took her outside, got into a car, and drove away with another unidentified man. The woman’s friends tried to intervene, but Barbour drove off. The next morning, the victim showed signs of sexual assault and sought medical help.
Biological evidence collected at the hospital was submitted for genetic testing, linking Barbour to the assault.
Second Assault
In the second incident, a 20-year-old Loyola University student was assaulted after encountering Barbour and Jahbari Noel, whom she knew from Instagram. The men followed her to her dorm, where they gave her more alcohol. The victim recalled waking up naked on the couch, where Barbour and Noel sexually assaulted her.
After managing to escape, the woman sought help from her roommate, campus security, and the police. DNA evidence collected from both assaults matched Barbour’s DNA.
Legal Consequences
Barbour is now facing charges of aggravated criminal sexual assault and aggravated kidnapping, while Noel is charged with aggravated criminal sexual assault causing bodily harm. Both men have been ordered detained pending trial.
These disturbing incidents highlight the importance of holding perpetrators of sexual violence accountable and ensuring justice for the victims.
