25-Year-Old Man Charged with First-Degree Murder in Fatal Stabbing Outside Englewood Gas Station
A tragic incident unfolded outside a BP gas station at 63rd and Wentworth in Englewood when a 25-year-old man, Darius Barney, allegedly fatally stabbed a 71-year-old man in what seemed to be a dispute between two panhandlers. The victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, was attacked without provocation by Barney, leading to his untimely demise.
Surveillance footage captured the chilling moment when Barney, wearing a distinctive black jacket with pink stripes and a pink purse, approached the older man outside the gas station. The footage revealed Barney rummaging through his bag before engaging the victim in what appeared to be a heated one-sided conversation.
Without warning, Barney brandished a knife from his purse and struck the victim in the abdomen with a single fatal blow. Shockingly, the victim did not exhibit any signs of aggression before the attack, making the incident even more senseless and tragic.
Following the stabbing, Barney callously walked away from the scene, casually waving his hand as if bidding farewell to the victim. The injured man managed to stumble into the gas station store before collapsing. Despite prompt medical attention, he succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
Barney was apprehended by law enforcement officers at another gas station at 63rd and Drexel, over a mile away from the crime scene. Acting on a description of the assailant, officers spotted Barney walking towards them with his hands concealed behind his back. He surrendered peacefully and informed the police that the murder weapon was still in his purse.
During a court hearing presided over by Judge Antara Rivera, Barney was remanded into custody on a first-degree murder charge. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the senseless violence that can erupt in seemingly mundane situations.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance and empathy in our interactions with others, especially in moments of vulnerability and desperation. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and loved ones as they navigate this heartbreaking loss.
