Detectives in Chicago are investigating a death after a man was found with gunshot wounds, a neck laceration, and signs of smoke inhalation in a burning apartment in the South Loop on Wednesday evening.

Firefighters in Chicago arrived at a blaze on the second floor of an apartment building in the 1300 block of South Wabash Avenue around 5 p.m. Inside, they found a 33-year-old man and called the police upon discovering a firearm and recognizing that the victim had been shot, as detailed in a preliminary police report.

Further investigation indicated the man had also suffered a cut to his neck and smoke inhalation, according to a statement from the Chicago Police Department (CPD). He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he later passed away.

On Wednesday night, detectives collected surveillance footage and other evidence from the site as they sought to understand the circumstances leading to the man’s death. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office is set to perform an autopsy on Thursday.

CWBChicago was created in 2013 by five residents of Wrigleyville and Boystown who had grown disheartened with inaccurate information that was being provided at local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings.

Our coverage area has expanded since then to cover Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and other North Side Areas. But our mission remains unchanged: To provide original public safety reporting with better context and greater detail than mainstream media outlets.
