Man Sentenced to Four Years in Prison for Robbing Red Line Passengers
One of the two men involved in the robbery of Red Line passengers, which included stealing shoes and other property, has been sentenced to four years in prison. Raekwon Matthews, 25, pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery and received the sentence from Judge Arthur Willis, as per court records. The other suspect, 18-year-old George McCray, is still contesting the charges.
The incident occurred on June 27, 2025, when Matthews and McCray allegedly approached two 19-year-old men on a Red Line train near the Garfield station around 3 a.m. Matthews reportedly displayed what appeared to be a handgun and proceeded to rob the victims of their backpacks, shoes, $100 in cash, AirPods, a wallet, Beats headphones, and keys. The victims immediately contacted the police and provided descriptions of the suspects.
Law enforcement officers located Matthews and McCray moving between train cars near 63rd Street and found them in possession of the stolen items. An airsoft pistol was also recovered from the tracks between the rail cars.
Matthews’ sentence may be reduced to two years with good behavior and he will receive credit for the 210 days he has already served in the county jail. Court records indicate that Matthews had previously been acquitted of robbery and firearms charges in separate cases in 2023.
