Daniel Krichilsky (Chicago Police Department)

A man has been charged in connection with burglaries at apartment buildings in Chicago’s West Loop and Old Town, allegedly intending to steal residents’ identities. Prosecutors have identified 13 victims, including three seniors over the age of 60.

Daniel Krichilsky, 45, was recently indicted by a Cook County grand jury on charges including two counts of burglary, three counts of aggravated identity theft targeting victims over 60, and one count of identity theft. The alleged incidents occurred between April 23, 2023, and January 26, 2024, with victims reportedly suffering losses between $10,000 and $100,000.

Prosecutors highlighted specific incidents in the indictment, noting that Krichilsky allegedly targeted an apartment on West Randolph Street in the West Loop on May 18, 2023, and another on North Orleans Street in Old Town on August 17, 2023. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service indicated that mail theft was involved in the burglaries.

The alleged crime spree reportedly began while Krichilsky was out on bail from a previous burglary arrest in July 2022 in Lincoln Park. Court records reveal that a property manager discovered Krichilsky inside an apartment building on North Clybourn Avenue, where he was accused of damaging furnaces, an internet server rack, and an office door. When questioned by police, Krichilsky allegedly claimed he was attempting to repair the air conditioning.

Upon arrest, police allegedly found Krichilsky in possession of $843 in cash, 14 credit, debit, and gift cards, a check, two driver’s licenses with different names, a laptop, and two counterfeit U.S. Postal Service master keys, according to court documents.

In May 2023, shortly after the new set of burglaries allegedly began, prosecutors permitted Krichilsky to plead down the Lincoln Park case to a misdemeanor trespassing charge. Judge Timothy Joyce sentenced him to two years’ probation. However, records show a warrant for probation violation has been outstanding since October 2024. Krichilsky remains free, awaiting trial.

Krichilsky’s criminal history in Cook County includes a 2017 conviction for manufacture or delivery of heroin, resulting in probation; a 2018 felony theft conviction involving $100,000 to $500,000, also resulting in probation; and two burglary convictions in 2021, leading to a three-year prison sentence, largely served through electronic monitoring.
