A recent case study published in JAMA Cardiology highlighted the dangers of following extreme fad diets, such as the carnivore diet. The report detailed the case of a man in his 40s who developed yellowish nodules on his hands, feet, and elbows after adopting a carnivore diet rich in animal fats.

The patient sought medical help at Tampa General Hospital after noticing the nodules appearing on his body. The doctors, Konstantinos Marmagkiolis, Jaime Caballero, and Cezar Iliescu, linked the symptoms to the high-fat carnivore diet the patient had been following for eight months. The patient reportedly consumed large amounts of butter, cheese, and fatty foods daily, leading to cholesterol levels four times higher than normal.

The diagnosis revealed that the patient was suffering from xanthelasma, a condition characterized by yellowish cholesterol deposits in various parts of the body. The cholesterol had accumulated on his palms, soles of his feet, and elbows, causing discomfort and skin cracks. The doctors advised the patient to reduce his fat intake to prevent further complications associated with high cholesterol levels.

Treatment options for xanthelasma included surgical excision or burning the nodules with liquid nitrogen. The doctors also emphasized the risks of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and liver problems associated with untreated high cholesterol levels. The patient was urged to prioritize his health and make dietary changes to prevent future health issues.

The case study serves as a cautionary tale about the potential dangers of extreme diets and the importance of balanced nutrition for overall health. It highlights the need for individuals to consult healthcare professionals before making drastic changes to their diets to avoid adverse health consequences. Ultimately, the patient’s experience underscores the importance of moderation and informed decision-making when it comes to dietary choices.
