Dimitri Sanders, a 25-year-old man from Chicago, is facing serious charges after allegedly opening fire on a group of women during a dispute on the Fourth of July. The incident resulted in the death of 59-year-old Cassandra Sims and left another woman injured. Sanders appeared in court for a hearing at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse where Judge Susana Ortiz ordered his detention.

According to prosecutors, Sanders got into a heated argument with the women and then shot at them while their backs were turned in the 900 block of North Leclaire. He was identified as the gunman in several photo line-ups and his phone’s location data placed him at the scene of the crime at the time of the shooting. Additionally, his search history on his phone revealed that he had looked up information about the shootings, further incriminating him in the case.

Court records show that Sanders had a previous run-in with the law, as he was charged with felony gun possession in October 2021. However, prosecutors reduced the charge to a misdemeanor in a plea deal last year, resulting in Sanders receiving a sentence of two days, which he had already served, from Judge Michael Hood.

The tragic incident has left the community in shock and mourning the loss of Cassandra Sims. Sanders’ alleged actions have raised concerns about public safety and the prevalence of gun violence in Chicago. The case will continue to unfold as prosecutors build their case against him.
