Man Sentenced to 14 Years for West Side Shooting

A 25-year-old man, Jawaun Stamps, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for a shooting on the West Side of Chicago. This incident occurred just 15 days after he posted bail in a separate gun case.

Stamps pleaded guilty to aggravated discharge of a firearm toward an occupied vehicle and unlawful possession of a firearm. The judge sentenced him to 13 years for the firearm discharge charge and an additional one-year term for illegal weapon possession.

The shooting took place on June 4, 2022, in the 3600 block of West Douglas Boulevard. Stamps, armed with a rifle, opened fire on a nearby home while a Chicago police detective was driving to work. One man sitting on a porch was hit by the gunfire. Stamps then fled the scene in a carjacked vehicle, which later crashed into a brick wall.

Police recovered multiple shell casings at the scene, indicating a significant amount of gunfire. Stamps was also involved in a previous gun case just days before this incident.

On May 20, 2022, Stamps was arrested by Chicago police officers after fleeing the scene of gunfire in a carjacked Mercedes. He was found with a rifle in the vehicle. Despite this arrest, Stamps was released on bail and went on to commit the shooting on the West Side.

Stamps has been identified as a dangerous gang member in a CPD intelligence report. He has multiple gang-related tattoos and a history of firearm possession charges. His attorneys deny any gang involvement, stating that his only prior conviction as an adult was for misdemeanor firearm possession.

Stamps is expected to serve a significant portion of his 14-year sentence before being eligible for parole. The Illinois Department of Corrections estimates his parole eligibility date to be December 9, 2033.
