A Second Murder in Eight Days on the Near North Side
A tragic incident unfolded early Sunday on the Near North Side as a 41-year-old man lost his life to gun violence, marking the second murder on the same block in just eight days.
Shortly after midnight, police officers in the vicinity of Chicago Avenue and Cambridge Avenue reported gunfire. Upon arrival, they discovered the victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite being rushed to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, the man succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities have not disclosed further details about the shooting, and no description of the assailant has been released.
Just a week prior, a similar tragedy occurred at the same intersection when officers heard gunshots and found a 46-year-old man, Darrin Carter, fatally wounded inside a vehicle.
Following investigations, Obbie Sanders, 49, was charged with Carter’s murder. Surveillance footage captured Sanders, who has a history of criminal offenses and mobility issues, shooting Carter in broad daylight as he sat in his SUV on the 800 block of North Cambridge.
Video evidence from Chicago Police Department and Chicago Housing Authority cameras showed Carter attempting to flee the scene and seeking help from nearby officers before succumbing to his injuries at the hospital.
Sanders attempted to evade capture, leading police on a chase through downtown Chicago and causing multiple vehicle collisions before being apprehended. Physical evidence, including shell casings and bullets, linked him to the crime scene.
Currently held without bail, Sanders faces charges of first-degree murder and murder committed during a forcible felony due to his criminal record.
