A 36-year-old man is recovering after an overnight shooting on a Chicago sidewalk, marking the Loop’s sixth incident of gun violence this year.
The incident took place shortly after 1:00 a.m. in the first block of East Lake Street, near the Virgin Hotel. Residents from adjacent high-rises reported gunfire, but police initially found no evidence of a shooting. About 45 minutes later, the victim arrived at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in a red Nissan Rogue, suffering from two gunshot wounds to his left thigh. Authorities noted he was in fair condition.
According to a CPD media statement, the victim indicated he was standing on the sidewalk when he “heard a loud noise and felt pain.” Meanwhile, an officer monitoring the police district’s surveillance reported that footage showed two individuals exiting the Nissan Rogue and heading toward a nearby 7-Eleven, as the driver discharged three to four rounds, seemingly aiming at a person near the convenience store.
The driver of the Rogue left the scene after dropping the victim off at the hospital.
This shooting marks the sixth in the Loop for the year, reflecting a decline compared to the peak years during the COVID pandemic. At this time in 2024, there had been 10 shootings in the area, with previous years recording 14 in 2023, 34 in 2022, 26 in 2021, and 13 in 2020. There were only 4 incidents in the Loop during the same timeframe in 2019.
For statistical clarity, CWBChicago includes accidental self-inflicted shootings and police-involved incidents in its shooting tallies.
