Prosecutors have filed charges against an 18-year-old man and two juveniles in connection with a brutal assault that left a 62-year-old man severely injured on a CTA bus last week.
Larry Gilkey was on a northbound bus on the 700 block of South Cicero Avenue when he was attacked around 5:30 p.m. on December 16, as reported by Chicago police and his family. According to a relative, Gilkey was approached by one of the attackers who asked him for money to ride the bus. When Gilkey took out cash, another assailant struck him, leading to a group assault that left him in critical condition. Gilkey was placed in a medically induced coma but has since been brought out of it, although he faces a long road to recovery.
Authorities have identified three individuals responsible for the attack: 18-year-old Lyndale Roberts, a 15-year-old boy, and a 15-year-old girl. Roberts is facing charges of two counts of aggravated battery of a person over 60, aggravated battery of a transit passenger, and additional misdemeanor charges. The two juveniles have each been charged with two counts of aggravated battery of a victim over 60 and aggravated battery of a transit passenger. The 15-year-old girl also faces a charge of attempted possession of a stolen motor vehicle.
Due to Illinois law, no further information about the juveniles has been released as their cases are shielded from public view.
The incident has shocked the community and raised concerns about safety on public transportation. The swift action by law enforcement in identifying and charging the suspects is a step towards justice for Larry Gilkey and his family.
