In a tragic reminder of the dangers lurking in everyday life, a married mother has revealed the profound impact of a brutal subway attack that left her living in constant fear. Wan Xu, 36, was viciously shoved onto the tracks at a Manhattan subway station on August 29, 2023, during her commute home. The perpetrator, Samuel Junker, 41, was sentenced to ten years in prison for this shocking act of violence.

With tears in her eyes, Xu shared how the traumatic event has significantly disrupted her life, instilling a pervasive fear of both traveling through the city and staying at home. Junker, who struggles with schizoaffective disorder, followed Xu into the Chambers Street subway station and pushed her from behind, resulting in a broken leg.

“Every time I walk into a subway station, I feel my heart racing and my hands shaking. It feels like the attack could happen again at any moment,” Xu expressed during her victim impact statement. Her statement highlighted the debilitating effects of fear and trauma that continue to haunt her.

Wan Xu recalls the harrowing day she was shoved onto the subway tracks by Samuel Junker.
Samuel Junker was sentenced to a decade in prison for his violent actions against Wan Xu.

During the sentencing at the Manhattan Supreme Court, Judge Laura Ward addressed the seriousness of the act and noted Junker’s expression of remorse. Despite his struggles, he apologized to Xu, stating, “My apologies run deeper than the ocean for how sorry I am to this poor innocent person. I will continue to pray for you.”

Xu, a dedicated mother, has faced not only physical pain from her injury but also psychological trauma that has shattered the sense of safety she previously felt. “It’s as if we’re trapped in an invisible cage, haunted by the shadow of that attack. My husband and I are both experiencing this trauma,” Xu explained.

During the trial, Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Dylan Los Huertos emphasized the severity of the crime, stating that Xu was forced to endure a nightmare shared by many New Yorkers. Prosecutors recommended a 12-year sentence, highlighting the need for justice in such shocking incidents.

The court recognized Junker’s repeated reflections of remorse over the past two years since the attack. Judge Ward remarked, “I know you experienced every New Yorker’s nightmare, and I’m sorry you and your family had to endure that ordeal.”
