Rob Reiner’s Son Nick Opens Up About Struggles with Drug Addiction and Homelessness
The renewed scrutiny surrounding the Reiner family has brought to light a 2016 interview in which Nick Reiner, son of acclaimed director Rob Reiner, candidly discussed his long battle with drug addiction and a period of homelessness.
Nick revealed that he entered his first rehab facility at the young age of 15 and had been through a total of 17 treatment programs by the time he was 22. These experiences served as the inspiration for the semi-autobiographical film Being Charlie, which he co-wrote and his father directed.
In the interview, Nick disclosed that he made the decision to reject further treatment and live on the streets instead. “If I wanted to do it my way and not go to the programs they were suggesting, then I had to be homeless,” he explained.
His choice led to a period of instability as he found himself homeless in various states, including Maine, New Jersey, and Texas. “I spent nights on the street. I spent weeks on the street. It was not fun,” Nick recalled.
Despite the challenges he faced, Nick acknowledged that the experience shaped him as a person. “That made me who I am now, having to deal with that stuff,” he admitted. “I met crazy great people there, so out of my element.”
Returning home after his time on the streets was not easy for Nick. “There was a lot of dark years there,” he shared. “Now, I’ve been home for a really long time, and I’ve sort of gotten acclimated back to being in L.A. and being around my family.”
Nick also reflected on the dangers he faced during his time of homelessness. “When I was out there, I could’ve died,” he revealed. “It’s all luck. You roll the dice, and you hope you make it.”
Despite the hardships he endured, Nick’s story serves as a testament to his resilience and determination to overcome his struggles with addiction and homelessness.
