“The Sticky” Review: A Zany Crime Drama with a Maple Syrup Twist

Just over a decade ago, the Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist made headlines as the biggest robbery in the country’s history. Now, Brian Donovan and Ed Herro have taken inspiration from this real-life event and put their own spin on it in Prime Video’s latest dramedy thriller, “The Sticky.” Set in a small Quebec town where syrup is king, the series introduces us to three unlikely characters – Ruth, a determined maple farmer (played by the talented Margo Martindale), Mike, a Boston mobster with a short fuse (portrayed by Chris Diamantopoulos), and Remy, a clueless security guard at the Quebec Maple Association (played by Guillaume Cyr). Together, this unlikely trio embarks on a wild and wacky mission full of hijinks and false starts.

The six-episode crime drama kicks off with a dead body found submerged in a vat of maple syrup, setting the stage for an intriguing tale. As the story unfolds, we learn about Ruth’s struggles to keep her farm afloat, Remy’s frustrations at work, and Mike’s shady dealings on behalf of his bosses. At the heart of it all is Leonard Gauthier, the manipulative head of the Maple Association, who preys on local farmers with unfair practices.

Desperate for cash, Ruth enlists the help of Mike and Remy to pull off a heist worth $150 million in syrup from the Maple Association. However, their plans quickly unravel, leading to chaos and unexpected consequences. As Detective Valérie Nadeau and local officer Teddy Green start investigating, the trio finds themselves in deep trouble.

“The Sticky” is a delightfully preposterous series that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats with its constant twists and turns. Each episode is filled with humor and suspense, culminating in a thrilling climax in the penultimate chapter. While the focus is on the heist itself, the show also delves into the characters’ struggles against oppressive systems and circumstances, making them both despicable and oddly endearing.

Despite its violent and shocking moments, “The Sticky” never loses its sense of fun, thanks to a sharp script and a talented cast. The series ends on a cliffhanger, hinting at the possibility of another season to come. Overall, “The Sticky” is a must-watch for fans of crime dramas looking for something fresh and exciting.

Don’t miss the premiere of all six episodes of “The Sticky” on Prime Video on Dec. 6.
