Marc Jacobs: A Fashion Icon Celebrating 40 Years
Editor’s note: This year was a big one for Marc Jacobs, who marked his 40th anniversary in fashion and became the first guest editor of American Vogue. We’re closing out 2024 with an archival look back at the designer’s career. This spring 1995 collection, presented in New York on October 29, 1994, has been digitized as part of Vogue Runway’s ongoing efforts to document the history of fashion shows.
As Vogue reported, the spring 1995 collection by Marc Jacobs was a nostalgic nod to the sophisticated, sexy Saint Laurent woman of the ’70s. However, Jacobs infused the runway with his own unique twist, incorporating elements like leis, Mickey Mouse ears, and nautical motifs adorned with anchors. The collection also featured satin Western dresses that could be custom ordered from Manuel in Nashville.
The show culminated in a dazzling display of gold lamé looks with a touch of ’30s glamour. Supermodels Kate Moss and Kristen McMenamy stole the spotlight, with Moss wearing a crown of flowers and McMenamy donning a black witch’s hat and cape. The models carried balloons, adding an element of whimsy to the runway that felt reminiscent of a festive costume party.
Over the past four decades, Marc Jacobs has solidified his status as a fashion icon, pushing boundaries and redefining trends. From his early days at Perry Ellis to his groundbreaking work with his eponymous label, Jacobs has consistently captivated audiences with his creativity and vision.
As we celebrate Jacobs’ illustrious career and the impact he has had on the fashion industry, it is clear that his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of designers. Here’s to 40 years of Marc Jacobs and many more to come!
