Forty years after their historic championship win in 1985, a Marist Albion team deeply connected to the club’s rich history is set to face off against Linwood in the Metro premier final this Sunday. The head coach, Ross Kennedy, has a direct link to the legendary 1985 team as his father, Adrian, was a member of that squad. Current hooker Rowan O’Gorman’s uncles, Pat and Simon, as well as injured fullback Isaac Hutchinson’s father, Brent, were also part of the championship-winning team.

The 1985 team boasted players like Marist great Tala Kele and was captained by none other than Steve Hansen, who went on to become one of the All Blacks’ most successful coaches. Kennedy shared that the legacy of 1985 has been a driving force for the team this season, with the goal of reaching the green fence at Rugby Park, a symbolic landmark for the club.

Despite this year’s final being held at Apollo Projects Stadium, Kennedy emphasized that it still holds the significance of the green fence metaphorically. Former club captain Terry McCormick recalled the 1985 season as a redemption story after a previous final loss, highlighting the joy of winning the first championship since the 50s.

Kennedy’s team showcased their championship potential with a resounding 60-23 victory over Lincoln University in the preliminary final, led by wing Maretino Kaledou’s impressive four-try performance. The team has shown consistency throughout the season, with their only loss coming in round two.

On the other side, Linwood is defending their title from last year, their first in 51 years. Head coach Brendan Nolan emphasized the team’s focus on unity and family ahead of the final, highlighting the sacrifices made by everyone involved in the players’ journey.

Both teams are gearing up for a tight battle on Sunday, with lessons learned from their previous encounters. Kennedy acknowledged the pressure Linwood applied in their previous meeting and emphasized the importance of adapting to their style of play.

The final showdown at Apollo Projects Stadium promises to be a thrilling contest between two determined teams. Kickoff is set for 2.45pm on Sunday as Marist Albion and Linwood vie for the coveted Metro premier title.
