INDIANAPOLIS — Friends and former teammates of Mark Sanchez are struggling to comprehend the serious allegations against him, questioning how the once regarded “nice guy” quarterback ended up bloodied on an Indiana street after allegedly assaulting a 69-year-old man with hearing aids following a night of heavy drinking.
Footage obtained by The Post reveals the 38-year-old former Jets quarterback, famous for leading his struggling team to back-to-back AFC Championship games, staggering toward a bar in downtown Indianapolis after sustaining multiple stab wounds during a fight in an alley after midnight on Saturday.
It marks a stark contrast from the Sanchez that his associates remember.
“I’ve known Mark since 2009, which is over 16 years, and he’s never exhibited aggression,” said Nick Mangold, Sanchez’s teammate until the 2012 season, in an interview with The Post.
“For something like this to occur, there must have been something wrong that night, and I hope the truth comes to light.”
Mangold referred to the allegations as “totally uncharacteristic,” emphasizing that “the Mark I know is not capable of this.”
On Monday, prosecutors escalated the charges against Sanchez, leading to a felony battery charge which could carry a six-year prison sentence. He also faces charges of public intoxication and unlawful entry into a vehicle.
Perry Tole, the truck driver involved, told authorities that he stabbed Sanchez in self-defense after being assaulted. Following the altercation, Sanchez allegedly grabbed Tole’s knife and cut open his cheek, injuring his tongue in the process.
Tole is now pursuing legal action against Sanchez, who accumulated more than $74 million during his NFL career, claiming he suffered permanent disfigurement due to the incident.

Surveillance video from a nearby business showed Sanchez with what appeared to be a bloody injury to his torso. He informed law enforcement that he remembered none of the events leading to his hospitalization, while the driver was treated in the hospital, shown in images with a neck brace and considerable facial injuries.
The driver’s family has expressed that he is “okay” but remains in shock over the circumstances.
This baffling incident contrasts with the character of Sanchez as described by those who know him well, including his friends from high school who recall him as a respectable individual and someone who has always aspired for success. “He has always been a first-class guy,” stated Chane Moline, who shared locker room experiences with Sanchez in high school. “This is the strangest thing I’ve heard in a while,” Moline added.
