Former NFL quarterback Mark Sanchez has faced significant developments following an incident in downtown Indianapolis where he allegedly assaulted a 69-year-old delivery driver.

In a statement given to TMZ on October 6, Mark’s brother, Nick, expressed, “This has been an incredibly distressing time for everyone involved. Mark and our family are profoundly thankful for the care, love, and support we’ve received recently.”

Nick elaborated, “Mark is receiving medical attention for the serious injuries he has sustained and is concentrating on his recovery as the legal proceedings unfold. We want to convey our heartfelt appreciation to the first responders and medical professionals involved.”

As reported by Us Weekly, the former quarterback is alleged to have attacked the driver during a confrontation in an alley situated between the Westin Hotel and the Indianapolis Marriott Downtown shortly after midnight on October 4.

According to court documents acquired by Us, the driver alleged to the police that he felt Mark, 38, was “trying to kill him.” Responding officers found Mark with several stab wounds on his upper body while the older driver had injuries to his face. Reports indicate that the driver was collecting used cooking oil when Mark, appearing intoxicated, approached him.

Per legal documents, Mark claimed to the driver that he had spoken to hotel management about his truck’s presence. Security footage showed Mark entering the driver’s side of the vehicle, and the situation escalated into a violent encounter near a dumpster.

The driver reported to police that he first used pepper spray on Mark but later defended himself with a knife and stabbed the former athlete.

On Sunday morning, October 5, Marion County prosecutors charged Mark with three misdemeanors: battery resulting in injury, public intoxication, and unlawful entry to a vehicle. He was arrested at the hospital and later jailed, before being released on a $300 cash bond, with one charge upgraded to a level 5 felony, potentially leading to five years of imprisonment.

Us has reached out to Mark’s legal representatives for a statement.

Following the incident, the driver’s family, who wished to remain unnamed, shared graphic images of his injuries with FOX59 in Indiana. They noted that the man, who endured a deep cut across his cheek that affected his tongue, is “recovering but deeply traumatized.”

Mark, who last played for teams including the Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, and Washington Redskins, retired from professional football in 2019. He now serves as an analyst for Fox Sports and was scheduled to be on air for the Sunday-night game featuring the Indianapolis Colts and Las Vegas Raiders.
