One of the directors of the Yellowstone spinoff, Marshals, has spoken out in support of the show’s choice not to delve into the unexpected offscreen death of the character Monica.
Greg Yaitanes, who directed the premiere episode, shared with Collider that the series didn’t feel like a pilot because there was no backstory provided regarding Monica’s passing. The intent was to avoid going into specifics about Monica’s fate, played by Kelsey Asbille.
Yaitanes explained that the narrative was designed to reflect what it would feel like one or two years after the character’s death, focusing on the circumstances surrounding it rather than the event itself.
Yaitanes expressed appreciation for Asbille’s cooperation, particularly her approval for using her picture during a protest scene, which was crucial for that moment in the series. He emphasized that the scene’s significance lay in its emotional impact.
Initially introduced by Paramount Network’s Yellowstone from 2018 to 2024, Kayce, portrayed by Luke Grimes, and his wife Monica were central characters until the series’ conclusion. Monica transitioned from teaching at a local school on the Broken Rock Indian Reservation to becoming a professor at Montana State University, while navigating life with Kayce, who had moved them back to the Yellowstone Ranch after reconciling with his father, John, played by Kevin Costner.

After John’s death, Kayce, a former U.S. Navy SEAL, assumed control of the Yellowstone Ranch. Both he and Monica survived the series finale and remained together before Marshals began. However, by the time the new series premiered in March, viewers learned of Monica’s death from cancer.
Yaitanes shared his initial reaction to the scripts, questioning how the show would unravel Kayce’s previously happy ending. He noted that Kayce had a gratifying conclusion in Yellowstone, but with Marshals, life took a different turn. Yaitanes felt the second episode was more of a true pilot, bridging the original series with the spinoff.
He described the second episode as the one that sets the tone for the series. Yaitanes, who has personal experience as a single father, connected with the depiction of Kayce’s new role and praised the show’s approach to it.
Showrunner Spencer Hudnut also addressed Monica’s death, explaining that while Kayce had an ideal ending in Yellowstone, his journey needed a shake-up for the new series. Hudnut remarked that tragedy often finds Kayce, and it was ultimately decided that Monica would be the one to face a tragic fate.
Hudnut further explained that Monica’s death continues to influence Kayce’s path, as she guides him through the initial episodes of Marshals. Her impact is felt as Kayce attends a rally in her honor, which leads him to protect their son, Tate. Without Monica, Kayce might not have taken this new direction.
In closing, Hudnut emphasized the show’s intent to pay respectful tribute to Monica’s character while not overshadowing the ending of Yellowstone. He noted that real life’s unpredictable nature played a role in the narrative choices.
Marshals is broadcast on CBS every Sunday at 8 p.m. ET.
