A convicted murderer from California, Marvin Lee Mutch, who served 40 years in prison for killing a 13-year-old girl, has been arrested again for possession of child pornography, as reported by officials.
Mutch, now 68, was released in 2016 after spending four decades in San Quentin Prison for the murder of Cassie Riley in 1974. He had initially been arrested for kidnapping another 13-year-old girl at knifepoint while out on bail awaiting trial.
Last Thursday, Mutch was taken into custody in Vallejo for possession of child sexual abuse material, according to booking data from the Solano County Sheriff’s Office.
Despite maintaining his innocence, Mutch was serving as a director of advocacy for the Prisoner Reentry Network when he was re-arrested. Several electronic devices were seized for forensic examination by the sheriff’s office.
Mutch is currently held on a $300,000 bail and faces charges related to possession of child pornography, firearm possession, ammunition possession, and possession of a controlled substance while armed. The investigation is ongoing, and additional charges may be filed.
He is scheduled to appear in court for a hearing on Tuesday, as per booking data.
Cassie Riley’s body was found in 1974 near her home, showing signs of assault and drowning. Mutch was found guilty of her murder by a jury in just five days.
Despite being sentenced to seven years in prison in 1975, Mutch maintained his innocence throughout his 40-year stay in San Quentin Prison. He was finally released in 2016 after being denied parole multiple times.
Following his recent arrest, Mutch’s Prisoner Reentry Network defended him, claiming he is facing unjust persecution. The group launched an online fundraiser for his legal expenses, stating that Mutch has been a supporter of prisoners’ rights for five decades.
However, the post attracted criticism from the public, with many expressing disbelief and outrage over supporting a convicted child-murderer.
Requests for comment from the Prisoner Reentry Network remained unanswered at the time of reporting.
