Despite the harsh weather conditions of biting winds and snow flurries, a group of independent activists took to projecting a larger-than-life image of accused UnitedHealthcare CEO assailant Luigi Mangione on a building in Lower Manhattan on Thursday evening, February 20. The activists demanded a fair trial as Mangione prepared for his court appearance the following day.
Following his plea of not guilty to 11 state charges including murder and terrorism upon his extradition to New York in late December, Mangione was scheduled for a routine status check in state court on Friday.
The phrase “Free Luigi” has become a global rallying cry, appearing in various forms of protest and support. Mangione’s arrest in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, sparked discussions on healthcare costs, denied claims, and the ethical responsibilities of insurance companies in patient care decisions.
At just 26 years old, Mangione has captured public attention since his arrest. Images of his Pennsylvania mugshot were juxtaposed with photos from his past, leading to comparisons to religious figures like saints and even Jesus himself, as seen in the image projected on the building.
Photos from Mangione’s arrival in New York City and subsequent court appearances went viral, with many noting the resemblance to iconic religious art. During a court appearance in December, Mangione’s attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo criticized the public spectacle, particularly Mayor Eric Adams’ presence, and raised concerns about Mangione’s right to a fair trial amidst the media frenzy.
As of now, Mangione has not entered a plea on any federal charges, leaving the outcome of his legal proceedings uncertain.
