A striking mural portraying the Statue of Liberty with her face covered in shame has made waves on social media after appearing on a building in Northern France over Independence Day weekend. Titled “The Statue of Liberty’s Silent Protest,” the artwork was created by Dutch street artist Judith de Leeuw and was unveiled in Roubaix on July 4th. The timing of the mural coincided with President Trump’s signing of a controversial bill that includes significant cuts to programs like Medicaid.

In an email interview with Hyperallergic, de Leeuw explained that the mural is a reflection of her concerns regarding the United States’ harsh immigration policies and the strained relationship between the country and the European Union. The original Statue of Liberty, a gift from France to mark America’s centennial, symbolizes a friendship that de Leeuw believes is now in question. As the US approaches the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the artist questions whether the ideals of liberty and freedom embodied by the statue still hold true today.

The inspiration for the mural came from a news story that de Leeuw saw about an immigrant being forcibly removed from his home in the US, leaving his child behind. The artist felt compelled to respond to this injustice through her art. The collaboration with the URBX Festival and Collectif Renart in Roubaix helped bring the mural to life, and de Leeuw confirmed that it is a permanent installation.

Despite the powerful message conveyed by the mural, de Leeuw has faced backlash from Trump supporters and conservative critics who have labeled the artwork as disrespectful. However, the artist stands by her creation, stating that in a world filled with injustice, activism is not a choice but a duty.

Since the mural went viral, de Leeuw has also faced potential censorship on social media, with her Instagram account being flagged for review. While the reason for the review remains unclear, de Leeuw suspects it may be related to the political implications of her artwork. Despite the challenges and criticism, the artist remains steadfast in her belief that speaking out against injustice is essential.

In a world where art and activism intersect, de Leeuw’s mural serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggle for justice and equality. As the debate rages on, the Statue of Liberty’s silent protest continues to resonate with audiences around the world.
