Matt Frucci has been appointed as the new executive producer for “NBC Nightly News”. This transition comes as part of routine changes that accompany the appointment of a new anchor. Tom Llamas recently took over hosting responsibilities from Lester Holt in June of this year.
Previously, Frucci served as the executive producer for “Top Story,” another show anchored by Llamas that streams on the NBC News Now platform. According to Janelle Rodriguez, executive vice president of programming for NBC News, Frucci will balance both responsibilities. He steps into the executive producer role at “Nightly News” that was last held by Meghan Rafferty, who transitioned to a vice president role at Versant, a news standards position. Notably, Versant is set to be spun off from NBCUniversal by the end of 2025.
Rodriguez expressed confidence in Frucci’s capabilities in a memo to staff, stating, “Matt knows ‘Nightly’ inside and out. As EP of the weekend editions for over six years, he led the show to multiple seasonal victories.” She further highlighted his extensive experience with NBC News prime-time specials and coverage of significant events, including the Emmy-winning reporting on the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol.
Frucci joined NBC News in 2016, following a tenure at CNN where he played a pivotal role in developing “The Lead with Jake Tapper” and launching a version of CNN’s morning show, previously known as “New Day”. His career commenced as a desk assistant at ABC News, where he devoted nearly ten years under the Disney banner.
Ben Mayer will maintain his role as the senior broadcast producer for “Nightly News”.
Frucci is slated to begin his responsibilities in this new capacity on October 6.
