Matt Roussel’s woodcuts are a mesmerizing blend of intricate details, bold colors, and whimsical themes that captivate viewers with their enigmatic stories. From portraits of women adorned in unique attire to playful animals and overflowing florals, Roussel’s work is a visual feast for the eyes.

Rather than using traditional woodcut prints, Roussel takes a unique approach by carving wooden panels and then applying acrylic paint to create textured paintings. The result is a series of large-scale works that are both striking and thought-provoking. His pieces feature a diverse range of subjects, including portraits of women, goldfish transforming into birds, and scarab beetles adorned with oversized flowers.

Art enthusiasts will have the opportunity to admire Roussel’s work at several upcoming art3f fairs across Europe, including exhibitions in Strasbourg, Nantes, and Lyon in late February and March. For those unable to attend in person, Roussel’s pieces can be explored further on his website and Instagram page.

One of Roussel’s notable works, “Three Flowers Scarab,” showcases a scarab beetle surrounded by large flowers, creating a visually arresting composition that blurs the lines between reality and fantasy. Another piece, “Métamorphose,” features a group of blue fish that seamlessly transform into birds, capturing a sense of movement and transformation.

In “Fleur de Zhou,” a woman is depicted wearing a headdress of white flowers and an ornate brocade garment against a stark black background, creating a striking contrast that draws the viewer’s eye. Meanwhile, “Poisson pipe” showcases a comical fish wearing a top hat with an eyeball and a pipe in its mouth, adding a touch of whimsy to Roussel’s repertoire.

Other pieces like “La grande fleur,” “Golden dance,” and “3 cimes” explore themes of nature, femininity, and transformation through Roussel’s unique blend of woodcut and acrylic painting techniques. Each piece invites viewers to delve into a world of imagination and creativity, where the boundaries between reality and fantasy are blurred.
