Matthew Rhys has officially signed on to play a leading role in the highly anticipated Apple TV+ series “Widow’s Bay.” The show, which was greenlit for 10 episodes by Apple in September 2024, revolves around a mysteriously cursed New England island and its superstitious inhabitants. Rhys will portray the role of the mayor, who stubbornly refuses to heed the warnings of the island’s residents.
This latest project adds to Rhys’ impressive list of streaming TV roles. He recently wrapped filming for the Netflix limited series “The Beast in Me” opposite Claire Danes and is set to star alongside John Krasinski in the Amazon Prime Video serial killer drama “Silent River.” Additionally, Rhys has completed filming for the BritBox and BBC1 series adaptation of Agatha Christie’s “Towards Zero.”
Best known for his Emmy-winning performance in the FX Cold War spy drama “The Americans,” Rhys has also made a mark in HBO’s “Perry Mason” series and has appeared in various films such as “The Post,” “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” and “Jungle Book.” His versatility as an actor is evident in his portrayal of George Carlin in Jason Reitman’s film “Saturday Night.”
Represented by CAA, Anonymous Content, and United Agents, Rhys will not only star in “Widow’s Bay” but also serve as an executive producer. The series is created by Katie Dippold, who will also act as the showrunner. Hiro Murai is set to direct the pilot episode and executive produce the series alongside Claudia Shin and Carver Karaszewski. Joanne Toll will serve as a co-executive producer. The production is backed by Apple Studios.
