HBO Max Faces Social Media Naming Woes

Max, the streaming service formerly known as HBO Max and now known by that name again, is having trouble reverting back to its original name on X, the social platform formerly known as Twitter. The @streamonmax account expressed frustration on X/Twitter, stating that “twitter won’t let me change my name back.” Similarly, the @hbomax account also mentioned in its bio that they are unable to switch their handles back.

Despite the challenges, the Max account managed to update its display name to “Actually HBO Max.” The situation is made more ironic by the fact that Elon Musk had renamed Twitter to X in July 2023, with X being his preferred letter of the alphabet.

Following a branding flip-flop by Warner Bros. Discovery, Max transitioned back to HBO Max after two years. The move garnered online ridicule, prompting WBD’s social team to release self-deprecating memes to address the name switcheroo.

X states that changing the display name of an account should be simple according to its help article. However, merging multiple accounts or migrating data between accounts is not currently supported by the platform.

Max’s transition back to HBO Max is still ongoing on various internet platforms. While the @streamonmax account on Instagram has successfully switched to @hbomax, the situation on Facebook remains confusing with both accounts active. Additionally, on YouTube, @StreamOnMax has been shifted to @hbomax with the new logo, but the display name still showing as “Max.”
