Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s controversial radical-left tenant advocate, Cea Weaver, once openly discussed her strategy of using rent control as a means to disrupt the housing market and move towards a model of “full social housing.”
Footage of Weaver’s past statements has resurfaced on social media following Mamdani’s appointment of the 37-year-old as the new director of the city Office to Protect Tenants.
“We decided that fighting for rent control was a strategic and critical first step in the fight for full social housing,” she revealed in a viral clip that has been circulating online.
Weaver elaborated, “A lot of times people ask ‘Why are we fighting for rent control when we have NYCHA? We should be fighting to save public housing.’ We decided that through a program like rent control, we are able to directly challenge the logic of unfettered profit in the real estate market.”
While the exact time and place of Weaver’s remarks are unknown, her comments have caused a stir on social media platforms.
She further argued that advocating for regulation could potentially weaken the real estate industry by challenging housing as a means of wealth accumulation.
The backlash on social media was swift, with critics questioning the viability of policies that could undermine the speculative value of real estate.
Weaver, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, has a history of housing activism in New York City.
Following her appointment to City Hall, past social media posts surfaced where Weaver criticized homeownership as a tool of white supremacy and expressed concerns about gentrification.
Weaver has since acknowledged that some of her past remarks were “regrettable,” while Mamdani and DSA supporters have come to her defense, labeling the criticism as a “desperate right-wing attack.”
The far-left political organization maintains that Weaver is a valuable advocate for New Yorkers and that the city is fortunate to have her in a leadership role.
