Seán McGirr’s latest McQueen resort collection draws inspiration from the iconic images of British society photographer Dafydd Jones, known for capturing the aristocracy in all their glamorous revelry during the 1980s. Jones’s book, “England: The Last Hurrah,” serves as a visual time capsule of the era’s extravagant parties, hunt balls, and grand weddings, where taffeta gowns, tuxedos, and tiaras reigned supreme.
McGirr, drawn to Jones’s photographs for their depiction of a bygone era of opulence and chaos, sought to infuse his collection with a similar sense of nostalgia and rebellion. Reflecting on the parallels between the societal upheaval of the ’80s and the current state of affairs, McGirr sees a resonance in the themes of economic uncertainty and social unrest that define both periods.
For McGirr, who assumed the creative helm of McQueen following the legendary designer’s untimely passing, the collection represents a continuation of the house’s legacy of romanticism and defiance. By reimagining classic tailoring with a modern twist, McGirr breathes new life into traditional smoking jackets and cummerbund waistlines, infusing them with a dynamic energy that defies convention.
The collection also pays homage to McQueen’s iconic designs, with references to past collections such as the poppy print dress from the label’s spring 2004 show and the signature skull motif reimagined as gothic-inspired jewelry. Additionally, McGirr introduces a contemporary touch with the revival of the Manta bag from 2010, blending elements of the past, present, and future into a cohesive narrative of sartorial storytelling.
From high-necked mini dresses in tartan to draped kilts in Stewart tartan, the collection exudes a sense of British heritage with a modern edge. Argyle sweaters paired with low-slung trousers and chandelier shard jewelry add a touch of whimsy and irreverence to the sophisticated silhouettes, creating a juxtaposition of elegance and subversion.
In a nod to his Irish heritage, McGirr infuses the collection with a sense of storytelling, weaving together elements of nostalgia, rebellion, and romance. By embracing the tension between tradition and innovation, McGirr’s McQueen collection embodies the spirit of a new era while paying homage to the timeless allure of British style.
