The study, which will be published in the AAP journal Pediatrics Open Science, analyzed electronic health records of over 310,000 patients aged 8 to 17.

According to the study, there was a 65% immediate surge in prescriptions for medications like GLP-1s after the AAP issued its revised guidelines. Furthermore, the data showed a consistent monthly increase of 5% in medication prescriptions, while rates for nutrition counseling saw minimal growth. This trend highlights a shift in pediatric obesity treatment towards pharmacological interventions rather than traditional counseling.

The study’s findings raise important questions about the impact of medical guidelines on clinical practice and the potential consequences of increased medication use among young patients. It also underscores the need for further research and discussion on the best approach to managing childhood obesity and promoting healthy lifestyles.
