Medium CEO Allows Employees to Take Day Off for National Strike Against ICE
Amidst the hustle culture prevalent in tech companies during the AI era, Medium CEO Tony Stubblebine has taken a bold stance by giving employees the freedom to participate in tomorrow’s nationwide general strike protesting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The nationwide general strike, organized by activists advocating for “no work, no school, and no shopping,” aims to defund ICE due to the agency’s increased raids in U.S. cities, resulting in tragic deaths, including two U.S. citizens in Minneapolis earlier this month.
In a Slack message shared with Medium staff, Stubblebine emphasized that employees have the choice to participate in the strike in any way they see fit. He clarified that Medium does not impose political beliefs on its employees and that the decision to join the strike is a personal one, not a mandatory company directive.
As a platform that plays a significant role in facilitating the sharing of news, opinions, insights, and analysis on various topics, Medium acknowledges its responsibility to support employees in expressing their views through actions like participating in the strike. Stubblebine assured that necessary measures would be taken to ensure business continuity on the day of the strike.
While some tech leaders have voiced their opposition to ICE, many large tech companies and executives have been criticized for their ties to the Trump administration. Stubblebine’s decision to support the strike aligns with Medium’s commitment to promoting truth and diverse voices, rather than endorsing hateful content or racism.
Stubblebine also reaffirmed Medium’s support for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, which have faced challenges under the current administration. He emphasized the importance of standing up for values that align with the company’s mission and expressed solidarity with other tech organizations advocating for social justice.
Ultimately, Stubblebine believes that Medium’s success is intertwined with the well-being of the country, making it essential for the company to take a stand on issues like the nationwide strike against ICE. By allowing employees to participate in the strike, Medium demonstrates its commitment to social responsibility and supporting causes that align with its core values.
